MUSIC ITSELF

When music is added to words, it helps to clarify their meaning, or, perhaps more accurately, their significance, by giving the message a certain emotional heft or weight.

In their essay “Music, Mind, and Morality,” Alperson and Carroll state that the song is the best musical medium to communicate ideas and messages because of the different layers: music and lyrics. They can contrast or complement each other, and thus create a deeper meaning than one medium alone.

 

Coming from this statement, I analyzed two songs, “The Landscape is changing” by Depeche Mode, and “Earth Song” by Michael Jackson in order to find out how lyrics and music work together in these pieces, and what the songs “teach” us about the environment.
